Founded in 1957, Oscar Alwans traveled from Lebanon to Peoria to open Alwans Market on the south end of Peoria as a traditional grocery store.

In 1962, a new store was built on the current site in Peoria Heights with the advent of regional grocery stores. Alwans changed its focus toward a traditional butcher shop in the early 70's and still continues that same tradition today.

In 2006, the Alwans trio of third-generation owners decided to renew and expand their business with a new 11,000 square foot building replacing the 1962 structure. This building mimics the flavor the original downtown store founded in 1957 with classic red brick construction, state-of-the -art lighting, and the trademark cow statue mounted on the side of the building.

Today, customers old and new still comment on how much better things are, and what a wonderful store the Alwan & Sons Meat Company is. Employees have been part of the company for as long as thirty years and still growing.
