Founded in 1957, Alwan & Son's Meat Company is Central Illinois' premiere shopping experience, emphasizing the traditional butcher shop experience while featuring quality products and service expanding that experience.
Three generations of Alwans have served Peoria beginning in the south end of Peoria as a traditional grocery store. In 1962 a new store was built on the current site in Peoria Heights. With the advent of regional grocery stores, Alwans changed its focus toward a traditional butcher shop in the early 70's.
Since that transition the trio of third-generation owners decided to renew and expand their business. A new 11,000 square foot building was built and opened in 2006 replacing the 1962 structure.
This building mimics the flavor the original downtown store founded in 1947 complete with classic red brick construction and state-of-the-art lighting, in addition to the trademark cow statue mounted on the side of the building.
New building features include:
...an expanded meat counter of more than 30 feet featuring new cuts of meat, bringing its displayed cuts to more than 150.
...constant owner interaction with employees and clients.
...daily USDA inspections insuring greater quality control and flexibility in offering quality products.
...expanded produce and grocery lines offering a one-stop convenience shop including an organic line of fruits and vegetables, expanded liquor offerings, frozen foods of all types plus Alwans’ extensive line of custom seasonings, sauces, and marinades.
...a more diverse deli with triple the space of the old store featuring a New York style deli offering high-enddeli meats and cheeses.
...the outdoor lunchtime cafe featuring select meats from the store cooked on the open grill. Take it to-go or sit and enjoy the wonderful people and tantalizing smells.
